Foreground has been one of the hardest bands to find information about in this piece. They have some really great youth crew-inspired mosh parts and two-steps. My biggest qualm with their music is that I cannot, for the life of me, understand what he is singing.
Is he singing in French? I wish I could write that The Swarm aka Knee Deep in the Dead needs no introduction, but I think for a lot of younger straight edge kids in Canada they definitely do. Rising from the ashes of the early s first wave of metallic hardcore in southern Ontario is The Swarm, a semi-superground of members from some the biggest bands of that first wave including Left for Dead, Rebirth, and Acrid. Whether you have heard of them and their music or not, they have been hugely influential on hardcore as a whole, especially currently with the rise and subsequent fall of the so-called metalcore revival.
The late s and early s were a strange time for hardcore and especially straight edge. Traditional hardcore sounds were few and far between as metallic hardcore and metalcore dominated.
Along with the sonic change, there was also a change in culture; namely, straight edge became associated with violence and authoritarianism instead of self-improvement and self-discipline. This narrative became so overblown in parts of the United States that straight edge became a common headline in mainstream media often being associated with gang violence.
In the wake of all this, there was a backlash in the hardcore scene of bands who revitalized traditional hardcore music and mentality. Burden played a style of hardcore very similar to the other American bands at the time, especially Floorpunch.
Whereas many of the Canadian straight edge bands that came before them were drastically different than their peers, often being remembered as influencers, Burden expertly played traditional straight edge hardcore with some heavier leanings.
The youth crew revival of the late s and early s ushered in a new era for straight edge. Negative opinions that became associated with straight edge were soon disregarded as a new generation of bands arose that while proudly straight edge, began to drop the militant aspects that defined the youth crew revival. Go It Alone is a relic of this time-period as a lot of the members were straight edge but the band never officially was.
Go It Alone, in my opinion, are the greatest Canadian hardcore band. Add to Watchlist Unwatch. Watch list is full. No additional import charges at delivery! This item will be posted through the Global Shipping Program and includes international tracking.
