My own criteria were simple: to pick the tracks which not only had made a musical impact, but were solid sellers that enjoyed substantial radio play.

At this point I must confess to more than a little "partisanship" with respect to this music. My first job in the record business, circa , was as a salesman for California Record Distributors in Los Angeles, a wholesale distributor owned, as it happened, by Contemporary Record's owner Lester Koenig. Richard Bock's Pacific Jazz Records was one of the distributor's most important labels.

I always looked forward to attending the recording sessions at Contemporary's Studios actually, the warehouse on Melrose Place and at Pacific Jazz Studios on Third Street.

Koenig and Bock were very different personalities with unique approaches to recording and running their businesses, but I had the same great admiration for both of them and for the music they were producing. I'm sure that Lester and Dick would have enjoyed The West Coast Jazz Box , made possible to a large extent by their passion for the music. Enlarge this image. 3. This is, to be sure, a dangerous title for an album whose scope has been narrowed to about 15 years in the middle of the 20th century. Yet this four-CD box tries admirably to explode the old clichés about West Coast jazz, emphasizing specific coteries of Southern Californian and Bay Area musicians (with a few visitors from the Big Apple) yet refusing to limit itself to any one style.5/

  6. An excellent twofer of West Coast jazz and at the price a real bargain. The forty tracks, give a good impression of the laid-back jazz played in the Fifties and released mostly by the Contemporary and Pacific Jazz labels. All the regulars are here, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Bud Shank, Howard Rumsey, Shelly Manne and Lee Konitz for instance/5(3).

  9. my jazz collection for a number of years. There’s no real “beginning and end” to the west coast jazz phenomenon (and some might even question whether it was a “thing.” But to build a 4-CD anthology around jazz artists working on the west coast between (roughly) 19makes a lot of sense.5/5(6).
