But it wasn't until I picked up a couple of cheap compilations in the early '80s that I realized there were scores of garage surf bands that had popped up in that era, each turning out twangy electric- guitar anthems on minuscule labels. Their tunes, which throbbed with an urgency reflecting a regional sound every bit as vital as Merseybeat or Motown, were collected on these albums as "New Wave" party music. Not a bad idea, since the music reflected the hairpin adventurousness of surfing and its practitioners' nearly tribal celebrations.
But on these particular compilations, the full effect of, say, the Revels' "Church Key," an instrumental that stopped so someone could utter that slang word for bottle opener, would be blunted by added party sound effects -- with the same sound effects providing the same irritating segue between every cut. The forgotten gems of surf music are revived and remastered and reissued without the silly effects on the handsome new "Cowabunga!
At a time when you might have thought there was little else to box and collect, "Cowabunga!
