The album just kind of carries on from start to finish at a consistent level of quality. To black metal fans who aren't interested in the band's later work, I'd still encourage you to look into this album. You may find as I did a gem that captures that classic, unique feel of mid's Scandinavian black metal. Sure their brand of black metal is an aquired taste, but really their debut is nothing to be ashamed of.
If you wanted to sum up Old Man's Child, they are a black metal band that tries too hard on some albums and it comes off as forced at times. Like a lot of bands that try to hard this is why they don't get the respect they deserve. It's a shame too, especially for Old Man's Child. Old Man's Child don't really play the fruity symphonic black metal that the above mentioned bands make, so that's good. Instead they use acoustic melodies which I'm all for but at some parts they use them when they're not needed which in turn makes the direction of the songs seem very unsure.
When this happens the feel of the songs completely disappears and the listener is left wondering "Well? What now? Again, these death growls like the acoustic guitar melodies are used in some parts where they aren't needed. Drummer Tjodalv is outstanding as always He was one of the better musicians in Dimmu Borgir when they didn't suck so much.
The production is good. It's not raw, but it's not too over-polished. It's just good and it's better than completely sucking. Another thing that makes up for these few complaints is the album's artwork. My general rule of thumb is that if your album has damn good artwork, it will turn a shitty album into an even better album. Just think of artwork as extra credit after finishing your homework Both the original and re-issues artwork are both excellent and that's pretty hard because in this day and age, most re-issued albums with completely new artwork totally fails and looks lazy, but OMC managed to not stoop down to this.
