Albans City Hall in The DVD, which is audio only, contains a new 5. Limited to units. Astradyne New Europeans Private Lives Passing Strangers Rather than record the standard three tracks, the band and Conny instead decided to use the time to work on one and produce it to master standard. The gamble paid off handsomely and Sleepwalk secured them a record deal. They began again in rehearsal rooms where a routine way of working would be to set a tape recording and start long jamming sessions.
With Ultravox having achieved little commercial success with their first three albums with John Foxx as leader, Chrysalis were hesitant to throw money at the group until they were confident that they were going to be successful.
With no promo, the band was forced to travel around the country playing small gigs and performing on any TV or radio show that would have them.
One of their TV spots was later released as an official promo for the single. Shot in black and white, the clip was filmed in an abandoned warehouse and featured a heavily made-up couple dancing before being pursued through the building and across the industrial landscape by the band.
The band and director Mulcahy then flew to Vienna on a whistle-stop trip to shoot integral scenes, such as the gravestone of Austrian piano manufacturer Carl Schweighofer. As was the case with Sleepwalk , All Stood Still was released without a video, meaning once again that a TV performance had to suffice. The only time Midge spent serious money on clothes was the Burberry mac he wore, everything else was sourced from vintage shops.
The pencil moustache was the final flourish in replicating the suave sartorial style of the s. Just four months after signing to Chrysalis, Ultravox released their first single for the label on 16 June Despite this, Sleepwalk reached No.
Sort of like that 8-ish year period where one could design on a Mac, but still needed service bureaus to output film OR positives in high resolution — to be re-photographed for plating with a graphic arts camera!
The all-digital workflow is for me. It irks me that there are several reasonably expensive projects like this coming out at the moment, which is testing my budget sorely. Thanks for the full oversight of this. And it will all be on newly-ironic DAT tapes that no one can play.
A few of the hipster cassette collectors have already been sniffing around for pre-recorded DATs. JT — This comment was spammed unlike your last one. Forget pre-recorded DAT. That was lazy of me to suggest that. The real hipster wave might be pre-recorded DCC!!!
Hmmm, Its not great is it? It looks like its all or nothing. The St Albans live is the only bit of interest to me , but the clear vinyl is dearer than the 6 discs, What!!!! W — I totally get it. Especially in these, the End Times. Prince wins this war by dint of his Vault. An asset that no other artist can vie with. Not expecting much from the cassette disc! Having this box will give me a certain amount of delight that it exists and someone took the time to make it.
And not charge more. Hi Mr. Monk, glad to see this listed here. But will be interesting to see the reception here. But it will be interesting to extract the individual tracks, and see if there are some interesting] takes in there.
Will try Rough Trade US. The single's B-side, "Waiting" is a more solemn, bass-laden affair in comparison to the faster synth work of the A-side.
It now appears on the CD re-issue of Vienna as a bonus track, as well as various other Ultravox compilations. NorthNY Mark likes this. Sleepwalk Absolute classic. Propulsive rocking synth greatness. I love the synth line that kicks in at , the cherry on a very tasty cake. I remember them performing it on Top of the Pops, Roger Daltrey was co-presenting. After being heartbroken that Foxx had quit I was dubious about them continuing, but after seeing them rock the hell out of this on TOTP I thought damn I'm so on board this ride.
SteveRes , Sep 8, Devin S , willy , Uther and 2 others like this. Did anyone use it before that? ARL , Sep 8, Location: West Midlands,UK. Yam Graham , Sep 9, X Good sequencing after Sleepwalk - this is even more minimal than that song, with Cann on lead vocals this time.
Both the glossy picture sleeve and vinyl appear in near 'as new' condition UV4. The discs sit in individualp icture sleeve housed within the This edition was exclu. The vinyl shows just a fw light cosmetic surface scuffs but looks barely played CHS Clear Vinyl , also including Heart Of The Country Instrumental , in hype stickered gatefold picture sleeve that has been boldly autographed by Midge Ure in black market pen.
The sleeve displays minimal wear but does not detract from the signature, while the vinyl shows little evidence of play. Ideal for framing UV2.
Comes housed in a double album jewel case with slipcase CHRX Very excited to hear this further period material. I got into UVox only after appreciating Mr. I guess the best part is discovering the band en mass — what an amazing ride. Saw the band open for Simple Minds in at the O2 — was amazing. A kind nod to a great band, and some wonderful music. Love Ultravox and such a great album. Loved the single but never bought the album. Adding lemon juice to the wounds is when I read comments saying how good it sounds.
Not sure if this has been posted but came across an excellent Wilson interview from the Sounds website. I have to say I love his philosophy and approach to music.
Surely the Deluxe Edition release must be very, very close now. How very cool is this release!! We are pretty spoilt these days for reissues. Paul: any word on the Blondie albums box set? Last I heard they were gathering memorabilia images from fans…but all has been quiet. I was thinking exactly the same thing. Midge covering John Foxx vocals. Did you but it marc? Looking forward to hearing an official version of an early ish concert. With the Amazon Canada price, tax is not included and is added during the checkout process.
Just pointing out that that needs to be taken into consideration when comparing prices. So frustrating that they only release the 5. Why not have it as a stand alone? I too will be ordering through the site to show support. Interesting to me that people are looking forward to different things.
But still plenty to enjoy here and great news that a version of Vienna is finally coming out with all this stuff on it. This is one band I have no issue with milking the back catalog! The more the better. Numan has not been able to put out any live concerts on blu-ray or in 5. Sadly, most artists survive though performance ticket sales rather than physical media.
Then you would have a half speed one. But coming back to the CD format and here CD1 of the bundle: I do not need another version of Vienna Remastered as this was awfully compressed and hissing.
My point of view…. They missed a trick there as this is much desirable than a gig in St Albans,. Hi Paul… definitely all over this and want to order from the SDE shop. Checking out with PayPal shows a shipping charge of 41 pounds to the US. Hopefully I am missing something as this would effectively almost double the cost of the deluxe edition. Love the site! This set will probably surface in the US somewhere maybe Amazon US so maybe just see what your options are.
Which is absurd, which you consider it costs nearly 1 euro to send a piece of paper in an envelope within the UK. Same issue here. Really want to support your site with this, which would be my first purchase from you. I pulled the trigger with JPC. If it all works well I might be using them more with Amazon not shipping overseas. Totally agree — these little two words on the cover save money. This is really a minor quibble IMO.
I had to look up the Thomas Dolby art you mention. What a terrible graphic design decision, for what otherwise looks to be an exemplary reissue, with all the b-sides, some demos, a live dvd, and a generous booklet with both original covers, photos, and a paragraph of detail about every track.
Was waiting for you to announce this here. And for that you get a remix, b sides etc, demos, live stuff and surround sound. That is excellent value. Someone should tell Mr McCartney and I speak as someone who has bought most of his archive releases. Is there a DVD-A portion on the disc after all?
I believe they both were shot on 16mm film. Albans tracks would have been nice too :. Great content, love this album very much since it was released in the 80s. Bad choice for the DVD format for the 5. Would be a nobrainer with blu-ray. So I probably stick with the vinyl edition. Yes, i agree. Chrysalis US scrambled the track order on the first side of the album as follows:. Sleepwalk 2. Passing Strangers 3. New Europeans 4. Private Lives 5. It makes sense from a practical perspective for a live show, but seems like a strange way to sequence a studio album.
Nostalgic American listeners can always reprogram the running order, or play our old LPs. I sold my vinyl copy before moving to Canada and a few years ago picked up a Canadian copy. Not looking at the tracklist and put it on. I was confused. To me, Astradyne works as a huge statement of intent and the album just builds and builds from there.
I managed to get an early US CD with the alternative track sequencing, and felt that stacking the early singles at the beginning disturbed the flow. And echoing others here, I also hope that they continue with Rage in Eden next year, as there should be some interesting concert material and work-in-progress mixes — the two on the Definitive Edition were fascinating glimpses as those songs developed.
I think we all have biases, preferring the track order we first heard or with which we grew up. I also thing there are distinct musical sensibilities that while overlapping still separate Europeans from Americans evidenced by the differences in what is successful in the UK versus US.
For me, never ever hearing the album with the US track order, the thought of starting off with Sleepwalk would be a jolting experience. Astradyne, apart from being an epic introduction laying the groundwork for the rest of the album, showed that their were a serious band presenting a work of art, not just another band trying to make hit singles. IMO the UK track order enhances the album experience. Like you, I purchased Vienna in the original vinyl format, released on Chrysalis Records in the States.
I always that Sleepwalk was a hot jolt to kick off the album. It prepared you for the succession of music that follows, on side 1. Astradyne, the final track, was a perfect to close. Atmospheric, ethereal, a wonderful instrumental that allows us to chill after so many adrenaline rushes that precede it. And, as you mention, it prepares us for Mr.
X, on Side 2. I thought, this must be a mistake. It altered the flow of songs I was used to, sinceVienna, Ultravox’s first album with Midge Ure(Vocals/Guitar) was originally released in July Produced by legendary German producer Conny Plank (Neu!, Kraftwerk), it reached number 3 in the UK album chart and top ten in Australia, New Zealand and several European countries.. The album contains 4 UK Top 40 singles; All Stood Still, Passing Strangers and Sleepwalk (which is being .
